Fred Wessels was a successful banker and businessman who wanted to be remembered for founding three insurance and banking businesses. This abstract is from his mausoleum in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia.

The Concrete Fleet

This image was taken during a boat tour of the Concrete Fleet, aka Kiptopeke’s Breakwater. These concrete ships were made in 1942 during a WWII steel shortage. Two dozen concrete ships were built and served throughout WWII, with two seeing combat. The nine ships that make up the breakwater at Kiptopeke all served as transport and training vessels in the South Pacific. The breakwater at Kiptopeke protects the beach and pier now owned by Kiptopeke State Park.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Another stop on my recent trip out west was at the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I was there in 2019 with two of my grandchildren and we were all in awe of the scale of this project. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it a visit.
