At first glance this lush green hill looks like another rural Long Island landscape. In actuality it’s smack in the middle of an industrial park. It’s a land reclamation project that was started years ago at a closed landfill. The pipeline in the foreground carries any methane gas from the underground layers of decaying trash to a processing plant where it is used to power the reclamation facility. Also known as iconostases Kandylakia are the Greek version of a wayside shrine. They are found all over Greece, typically on the curve of a mountainous road. They are erected to memorialize the spot where someone was killed or as an offering at the place where someone was miraculously saved.
