The Best Of Monochromia – Mario Gervais – St. Paul West

Black And White Photography, Mario, Meho, Photography

Many of you might remember Meho Jarvis better known by his real name Mario Gervais. Mario was instrumental in getting Monochromia up and running and is a true friend to me. Whatever name he wants to use it fine by me because I will always consider him an extremely talented photographer as well as great web page designer – Joe

Taken in Montréal, Québec, in April 2014.

I like the heavy urban presence here. Unmovable concrete, bricks and windows. Then we see in the middle of this stopped urban scenery two individuals following the one way.

That Night

He opened the door and a woman stood there on the porch with anxious eyes.

May I help you? Says the man.

Oh… I just want to see Eric.

Eric? There is no Eric in here

No Eric… ? Are you sure? Damn…

Of course I am…

She said nothing more, took two steps back and, just before he closed the door, he seen the depth of the inevitability in her face.

There was nothing to add. Nothing more to say. She had already thought of this possibility but wouldn’t believe it. What she feared the most in the last 6 years was now a reality….

To the left, the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec (Our Lady of Quebec City), is the primate church of Canada and seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec, the oldest in the Americas north of Mexico.

In the middle, The Price Building, is an 18-floor skyscraper. Built in 1930-1931 amid controversy for Price Brothers ltd., it is the tallest building in the Old Quebec historical district, and one of the oldest skyscrapers in Canada.

To the right, The Musée de l’Amérique francophone (formerly the Musée de l’Amérique française). Its mission is for the development and promotion of French culture in North America. The museum collection is managed by the Musée de la civilisation since 1995.

If you come to Quebec city, don’t forget to take the city tour by horse and carriage, by night or at sunset, it could be one of your best memories from this old garrison-walled city.

Oh! also, don’t forget to call me if you need a private city guide. It will be be real pleasure, there are beautiful terraces and good wine.

There is always a back door for each restaurant and those are often looking spooky compared to the front one. It reminds me of gangster movies with famous back door escape.

St-Roch is the neighborhood where anybody from different social classes can meet. Hummm…. Obviously, you’ll never meet a banker there but… Snack bar or gourmet restaurant, trendy pub or tavern, anything is there.

I used to live in a suburb financially comfortable throughout my whole childhood. As soon as I moved out from under my parents roof, I headed to something more “working class”. I’ve learned so much from these places. I’ve learned a lot about needs, how to get out of the bottom with nothing at all, and how to have self esteem while wearing worn out jeans for a job interview. 😉
