While in San Francisco, we attended the 11th Annual Flower Piano at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. This interactive outdoor music festival features 12 tuned grand pianos placed outdoors among plants, redwoods, and succulents. The pianos are played by over 130 scheduled professional and community-partner performances, plus public open play. Fabulous!

The terrasse railings do the framing work here — a classic street technique where an environmental element becomes a natural border. The 24–70mm at a moderate focal length maintains enough depth of field to keep both bars and subject in focus, while the bridge in the background adds a sense of place. Monochrome removes the colour noise of a busy café setting and focuses attention squarely on the figure and his relationship to the scene.

Captured at the Joint Base Andrews Air & Space Expo in Prince George’s County, Maryland (Sept 2022). In monochrome, the aircraft’s dynamic maneuver is stripped down to raw geometry and contrast – turning a momentary smoke plume into a lasting, sculpted arc against the dark void.
