Ansel Adams is for monochrome landscape photographers the same as Henri Cartier-Bresson is for black and white street shooters. For me, both legends are inspirational masters of their craft. While Ansel Adams captured the beauty of American National Parks in all their monochrome glory, similar places in Europe are much harder to find. But when doing a winter hike in the Weisspriachtal (in Austria’s Lungau region) along the banks of the Lonka river, I felt very much reminded of Ansel’s photographs. Capured with an Olympus PEN-F, image specs 1/400 sec @ f/10, ISO200 and 28mm focal length.

The dustman’s scooter, loaded and parked — a working vehicle photographed with the respect it deserves. The X100F’s close minimum focus distance lets you get into the detail of the load without losing street context. Monochrome strips the hi-vis orange from the scene and leaves you with texture: the packed crates, the worn rubber, the practical chaos of a working day. Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city.  Construction is believed to have begun in in the late 1290s by King Haakon V.  For centuries, the fortress withstood numerous Swedish led sieges. It did surrender without conflict to the Nazis in 1940.

Light and Shadow in the Mountains

Since leaving northern Minnesota in our RV and heading west, I’ve been treated to diverse and wonderful scenery. After stops in South Dakota and Wyoming, I’m currently doing an extended stay in Idaho in the Wood River Valley. For those not familiar with the area, it includes the towns of Bellvue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. We had a lovely camp site along Baker Creek, now we’re staying in a driveway west of Hailey and this weekend we move to another driveway before heading to Redfish Lake near Stanley. The upside to all this travel is photo opportunities galore.

I think I’m trying to channel my inner Ansel Adams with this one.
