One of my first photos inside the cathedral since the 2019 fire…
Shot on the Nikon FE with Ilford HP5+ inside Nantes Cathedral — a space that rewards patience. The high vaulted ceilings and narrow stained windows create pools of dramatic contrast that HP5+ handles beautifully at box speed. The challenge is managing the exposure gap between illuminated stonework and deep shadows; letting the highlights roll off rather than forcing them gives the image its weight. Meet Peter. You may recognise him from other posts of mine. He’s a Zoologist . and works at Norways Natural History museum. Long story short. a group of friends and I talked him into doing a guided tour of the museum when it was closed. He met us at the door looking like Richard Attenborough in Jurrasic Park. Needless to say we had a wonderful evening.

The Visitation Hotel in Frederick Maryland has a fascinating history as a cloistered monastery and internationally renowned academic institution. Originally built in 1824, the structure survived fires in 1845 and in 2023, and finally opened as a boutique hotel in December 2024.

While on a rainy day trip to downtown Chicago on the Metra, I grabbed a photo out the wet window of the train of the structure in the background. The timing of the shot also captured the rail crossing which added a starting point and leading line to the buildings in the distance.
