“Wildland firefighters do not enjoy the cultural prestige that structural firefighters do. They do not wax their fire engines and cruise down the local parade route, lights flashing; they are not the subject of countless popular books and movies; major politicians do not honor their sacrifices on the Senate floor or from the Rose Garden; they do not have bagpipe bands, fancy equipment, enduring icons, or other signifiers of honor verifying the importance of their activity.” ~ Matthew Desmond, On The Fireline: Living And Dying With Wildland Firefighters

After an overnight frost it is time to say goodbye to the hostas that grow near the front door.

A night at the opera

Andre, Black And White Photography, Photography

5 years ago, I was on a trip with some friends to Dresden, the capital of the stat of Saxxon here in Germany. It’s in the eastern part and was part of the GDR, which became part of the FRG back in 1990 when the inner-German border stumbles down and both parts of Germany were reunited after 45 years of partition.

This is the Semper Opera house at night in the center of the old town of Dresden only a couple of meters away from the former king’s palace. Despite the opera house was hit very hard during WWII it was reconstructed from 1977 to 1985 after years of preparation (1968-1977) and years of securing the ruined (1946-1955). Fortunately, they reconstructed the building according to the original plans. When we were there, we also took a guided tour to see the inside. It’s astonishing to see the inner parts of this building designed in the second half of the 19th century (1871-1878).

This building is well known in Germany because a brewery uses this view of the opera house at night in their advertisings.
