Fall Monochrome Landscape

Many agree fall foliage is also ideal for monochrome. The ability to adjust the luminosity across the color range can offer up interesting foliage tonality. When I first got out my car on this Ashe County, NC backroad, all the cows were in the shed. As a curious bunch, it took very little coaxing to get them to pose for this landscape composition.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I’m most grateful for this WordPress and Monochromia blog community!

Abandoned Barn on Rock Foundation

Old Barn in George Gap Composition 2 Monochrome
Old Barn in George Gap Composition 2 Monochrome

This unique old barn was found on the back roads of Watauga County near Sweetwater, North Carolina. The stone foundation supports one side of the barn’s placement on the edge of a hill. The vine consuming the façade appeared to have died, leaving a thick, craggily branching structure attached to the barn. To appreciate the cool textures, click on the image to view a high resolution version.

Abandoned Piano
Abandoned Piano

I found this old piano on the porch of an abandoned house on Silas Creek Rd while exploring the backroads of Ashe County. I try to imagine the music, peace, joy and family experiences once shared from this instrument. Who played, what did they play, and why was this piano and house abandoned?

I hiked to the top of Linville Gorge about an hour before sunset during my fall color expedition earlier this month. Of course there were just as many monochrome opportunities!

Just 10 minutes before sunset, a large cloud briefly swept in towards this vantage point on Rough Ridge Overlook just off the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) in North Carolina. See more of my BRP Gallery here.

Many photographers, including me, can sometimes be found roaming downtown alleyways looking for the architectural abstracts or street photography gems hidden behind the main street façade.

Lost and Found Landscape

South Fork Mills River Valley Composition 1
South Fork Mills River Valley Composition 1

This is from my North Carolina mountains visit last October, the composition was processed shortly after and ready to publish, but was forgotten.  Fortunately, I found it while planning my 2021 trip – coming up next week.  It was captured from the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower near Pisgah Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The tower’s stairwell was blocked at the base, but I was able to squeeze through and overcome my fear of heights to climb to just under the top platform.   I was rewarded with an amazing South Fork Mills River Valley landscape and dramatic light!
