The outbuilding was some way off the road. What caught my eye was the reflection of the sun off the broken glass. As photographers we are constantly searching for interesting elements; lines, textures, contrasts, and tones, and hopefully meaning*, which offerers the biggest challenge. Does the image serve as a metaphor for something deeper?

*Minor White asked us to not just, “photograph a thing for what it is, but for what else it is”, which I believe is the best advice to photographers anyone ever offered, “f8 and be there”, a close second.

Olympus OMD EM1 with 40-150mm f2.8 lens, processed first in Snapseed® then moved to Nova® for conversion to black and white.

Whisky Galore

Ok I have a little weakness. I do enjoy a whisky now and again. My last one was 3 weeks ago at a whisky tasting in Oslo. I will at least share the picture I took with you. However I’ve still some Monochromian’s I’d like to raise a glass…or two with.

Guess what’s behind this portal.

This is the main entrance to the machinery hall of a mining company. The mine was operated from 1899 to 1955. Now, it’s a mining museum and keeps the memory to the operation years alive. They display machines, typical clothing, tools, security and heath facilities as well as habits around mining in the Ruhr area.

My name is Garreth O’Brien. At 37 yrs. young I’m a proud married father to 4 sons. I’m a Republic of Ireland based mobilephone/smartphone photographer. O’Briens, is a photography page that I run and post image’s that catch my eye.  The image’s are varied from planned shoots to hip street shots. I roughly started mobile photography  back in 2011….

Views & opinions are divided when it comes to smartphone photography. I say it’s not the equipment but the artist. Black & White / Monochrome image’s speak to us more than that of a colour photo, with the simple tones that are Black & White, less is more.
