Idle

The leaves continue to fall, and then to whirl around my carport, never idle.  Meanwhile, my much loved bike has not moved in over a week.  My camera too, has not seen much action.

How does life get in the way of things that we love?

Each morning I walk by and feel regret … but also hope … soon I will feel the wind in my face and the camera in my hand.

So … your team is losing the game. What do you do?

You sit in the stands, taking photos of the rain.

(because of course … you never, er … rarely, leave the game early)

Come on over to Life on the Bike and check out the rest of the photos from an otherwise great trip to Pittsburgh!!

The New River.

Around these parts, folks like to claim that the New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world.  Whether that’s true or not is argued by geologists and historians, but it really doesn’t matter.

We sure do love our river.

Please visit Life on the Bike for more images of the New River surrounded by the beautiful colors of fall.

The Shining

As I walked around the house one evening this past week, I saw the setting sun shining brightly on the leaves of this small tree.  As my friend Gary says “right time, right place”.

Visit Life on the Bike to see this image in color.

Have an enjoyable weekend, whatever the weather and whichever hemisphere you’re in!

Flame On!

Flame On

Flame On

Participation in Monochromia has encouraged me to seek out subjects that will convert beautifully to B&W (as opposed to in the past when I would convert mostly when the color didn’t turn out quite right.  Hey … Just being honest here).  Anyway, there was much about this gas lantern that drew my eye, in particular, the flame.  Yet no matter how I processed the image, I just wasn’t able to get that lovely orange glow to stand out sans color.  While somewhat disappointed with that, it wasn’t until I got home that I realized that I’d caught the reflection of a flag hanging in front of an adjacent building.  What a nice happy accident!

Okay all you photographers out there: how would you have emphasized that flame?

If you’d like, check out Life on the Bike to see other images from my brief visit to Charlottesville, VA last week.

It’s not uncommon to hear people describe B&W images as dramatic, moody, even ominous.  Yet the day  was bright, the sky a deep blue, and the grass so green under the shining sun, and my goal was to reflect that in this image.  How’d I do?

This Old Stump

During the first stop of the ride, this tree stump offered me a place to prop my foot and re-tie the laces on my boot.  After removing my foot from the stump, I looked at the rings that mark the passage of years, and thought of all the gifts we receive from trees.

They beautify our lives, protect our earth, and offer us shelter.

They benefit us ecologically, spiritually, and commercially.

Proud to be a tree hugger!

Each time I drive up the dirt road to visit my friend Cherie, I look at this barn.  I can’t tell you how often I’ve taken a shot and just how often it didn’t work.  This time, though, the light was right.  Check out the color version on Life on the Bike and Other Fab Things and let me know what you think.
