Florence brought devastation to the Carolinas, and it will take a very long time for the land and the people to recover.  In the mountains of Southwest Virginia, we were lucky in terms of flooding and power outages.  This image was taken in Nelson County on the day that Hurricane Florence came through.

Florence though, was nothing like Camille, at least not in Nelson County.

On August 19, 1969, in the middle of the night while everyone slept, Camille stalled over Nelson County, Virginia, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, dropping an astonishing 27 to 31 inches of rain in just a five-hour period. The sudden inundation of water caused an entire side of a mountain at Davis Creek to cave in, destroying 23 of 25 homes.

Camille took 153 lives in Nelson County.  Property damage in Virginia topped a half-billion dollars, and it was a decade before the commonwealth got back to normal.

a rolling museum

During summer, this steam train rolls along an old track.

Once, this track was used to connect coal mines and steel plants with the industrial inland harbor from where the steel plants got the ore and the coal mined sent the coal. For several decades the track was closed, when a railroad museum got the idea to send one on their steam trains on the track again.

During summer you can meet the train on track at the first Sunday of the month. Additional driving days are in winter around St. Nick (Dec. 6th)

A Study of Six Broken Windows

This is a merger of two different panels of three small windows, combined to create the piece of art.  The play of light on each distinctly different pane gives rise to six unique compositions.

Shot with a Canon 7D, shuffled around via Photoshop, Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro 2.

The small cafe in the local natural food store that serves as my office away from home is frequently the scene of spiritual readings, and occasionally used for rehearsing plays. Sometimes the critics can be less than enthusiastic.

Panasonic GX85 with one of my favorite lenses, the Panasonic 20mm f1.7. I used the camera’s ‘L Mono’ jpeg black and white conversion and in-camera square crop.
