The Bridge

The Bridge | Oregon

Last weekend I finally returned to the Oregon coast, more than six years after my last visit. A black & white photographer’s paradise, for sure. The Astoria-Megler Bridge, taking US 101 across the Columbia River, the last bridge before the river runs into the Pacific Ocean. The gloomy weather definitely helped in taking this long exposure monochrome image, smoothing out motion in water and clouds.

Mountain View

Weisspriachtal | Austria | 2017

Ansel Adams is for monochrome landscape photographers the same as Henri Cartier-Bresson is for black and white street shooters. For me, both legends are inspirational masters of their craft. While Ansel Adams captured the beauty of American National Parks in all their monochrome glory, similar places in Europe are much harder to find. But when doing a winter hike in the Weisspriachtal (in Austria’s Lungau region) along the banks of the Lonka river, I felt very much reminded of Ansel’s photographs. Capured with an Olympus PEN-F, image specs 1/400 sec @ f/10, ISO200 and 28mm focal length.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss Landscape 1
Seljalandsfoss Landscape 1

Easily accessible from Route 1 on the southern coast of Ireland, Seljalandsfoss drops 197 ft (60m) from the plateau above, fed by the Seljalands River having its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull.  The ability to walk behind the waterfall is very cool feature, I plan to share photos of this feature in a future post.

Thanks to the 5-axis in camera stabilization of my Nikon z8, I was able to capture some water creaminess at a 20/sec exposure.  No time for deploying a tripod at this brief stop on our bus tour. For the best viewing experience, click to see a high resolution version.

Cheers,

Stjornarfoss

Stjórnarfoss Landscape 1

Stjornarfoss waterfall in southeast Iceland is nearly 49 feet (15 meters) in height. Though not among the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, the stunning surrounding landscape makes for a dramatic composition.

This site was one of several stops on a 12-hour bus tour along Route 1 of the southeast glacial coast in Ireland, leaving east from the capital of Reykjavík.  An average stop was only 45 minutes, taking 10 min off the top for a bio break, you’re left with about 30 minutes to enjoy the site and take pictures.  For me, that meant no time to cover most landscape composition opportunities and setup a tripod with ND for long exposures.

The other challenge is keeping the other visitors out of your shot.  Sometimes you have to use that new facing AI removal tool!

Cheers,

C. S.

Light at the Coast

Black And White Photography, Marcus, Photography
Oregon Coast | 2019

There is always a light at the coast. Ocean and sky never stop meeting in their eternal dance of motion and change. In this monochrome photograph taken on the Oregon coast, the light persists even in the contrast of shadow and silhouette. Softly illuminating the wet sand, piercing the clouds and outlining the trees that cling to the cliffs. The ocean reflects the sky’s quiet determination to shine through, no matter how heavy the clouds. The coast reminds us that light is not always brilliant. Sometimes it is simply a soft glow that remains. Guiding the eye of the passing photographer and his lens to capture something enduring.

Crying Rose

9/11 Memorial | NYC | 2018

Black and white photography speaks straight to the soul. Without the distraction of color, every glance, every wrinkle, every shadow becomes a whisper of emotion. It captures the rawness of a moment. The quiet sorrow in a gaze, the strength in a silhouette, the poetry in light and darkness. In its simplicity, it tells the most powerful stories, not in words, but in feeling.
