Rhythm in Vinyl

During a recent trip to Nashville, TN I visited the Johnny Cash Museum.  I didn’t have my camera with me so I used only my iPhone to take pictures – I had no idea they would allow it!   Anyway, I loved the rhythm that the vinyl records, each framed in black, made along the wall.  The labels of course were very colorful and a shot in color was nice, but the rhythm was more dramatic when converted to black and white.   The reflections you see are from the opposing wall that had an equal number of vinyl records framed out the same way.

Whether you are interested in vinyl records, or not, you may enjoy a post on my personal blog: Robyn Graham Photography, that includes an image and a quote about the subject.

Trouble Man

Trouble Man

I took this image in October when leading a sunrise landscape workshop for the  Heritage Conservancy.  I love the depth of the image, the power of the clouds and the lone utility pole.  My father and grandfather were both linemen for utility companies.  Although an educated man, my father wanted to do what his father had done before him and did not want to be inside at a desk.  He loved his job, most of the time – even though he often worked in inclement weather and challenging circumstances.

Living on the East Coast of the US, hurricanes can be a significant threat.  A few years ago a hurricane affected our area with flooding and power outages. A local musician and very talented artist, Lisabeth Weber, wrote a song, Trouble Man, in tribute to all of the linemen seen working diligently to restore power to our community.  I heard the song only a few years after my father had lost his battle to esophageal cancer.  It touched my heart and to this day when I see a crew of linemen, I not only think of my father, but of this song too.  My father would have been greatly honored by it.

Beautiful Eyes of a Tulip

Beautiful Eyes of a Tulip

SS 1/50  f 9  ISO 1000 Nikon D810

I used natural light to capture this decaying tulip.  I chose the settings to capture detail of the tulip petals and leaves.

As many of you know I do a lot of work with flowers and the history and language of flowers.  Tulips have various meanings, which I have included in the poem below, written to accompany the above image.  I hope you enjoy both the image and the poem.  You can find many more of my floral images and poetry on my personal blog: Robyn Graham Photography.

Beautiful Eyes

Beautiful eyes,

Of my faultless lover,

I look into your depths

And feel my soul,

A soul famed of imperfection,

Guarding a declaration

Of unparalleled desire.

Oh beautiful eyes,

Be mine.

Humble my longing

With a smile

And return my desire,

Share with me the fondness

Of a love unequaled.

To learn more about this image and to see it in color, visit my personal blog: Robyn Graham Photography I’d love to know your thoughts on the black and white image compared to the color image.  Some might say sunsets are like flowers and they should be photographed in color…I believe they can be compelling and thought provoking in both color and black and white.  Thoughts?

The Lone Cypress

The Lone Cypress

SS 1/25 second, F 8, ISO 500

I was fortunate to spend last weekend at Pebble Beach with my husband, watching golf in sunny, glorious 75 degree weather while all of my friends on the East were shoveling in frigid temps!  Warm hugs to all of you – and don’t worry, I wasn’t left out on the cold weather experience, as soon as arrived home to single digit temperatures it began to snow.

The tree in the picture is “The Lone Cypress”- the tree you see on the Pebble Beach Golf Links logo.  I took the shot just as the last rays of sun were sinking below the horizon.  You’ll notice in my settings that I used a long exposure. I wanted to freeze the water (bottom left is most evident). It was windy so there is motion blur to be observed in the bushes/trees.

“I felt that I admired you, but I told myself it was only friendship; and till I began to make comparisons between yourself and Lucy, I did not know how far I was got.” – Jane Austen

The meaning of the red tulip in the Victorian Language of Flowers is “Declaration of Love”.
