Oz

For some reason, this image reminded me of The Wizard Of Oz, hence the title and quote.

Please visit Photos By Emilio for the color version that looks nothing like Oz! Or Kansas!

There are so many small towns you pass through in southern Utah. I believe this was Parowan, due north of Brian Head and Zion. What attracted me enough to stop were the colors. So why post in black and white? Because I think it works just as well in monochrome. But, please, visit Photos By Emilio and you can decide for yourself. Color? Or Monochromia!

No Snow

Remember in November when we went up to Zion 4 times in 4 weeks looking for fall colors? A 4 hour round trip each weekend just to find out autumn had been canceled up there? Well, seems like winter has been cancelled, too. We went up there January 2 for snow. You guessed it. No snow. But I couldn’t complain about the sky. What great clouds. And, when I saw the symmetry of the curved tree limb mimicking the curve of the mountain top, I was in heaven. Of course, my wife thought I was nuts. She didn’t see it until I processed the shot at home. Now, she loves the shot.

Though she still thinks I’m nuts!

Well, the search continues here in the west. This is the third weekend in a row we have taken the 3 hour trip to Zion in hopes of finding autumn colors. No luck so far. But, what we have found is a new appreciation for the beauty that is Zion. So, next weekend we will be making the trip again. My fear, though, is that by then the temperature will drop so quickly that the leaves will fall even before getting the chance to show off their colors.

So, I meant to share a few images from this past weekend but decided I must share this image first. It made me think of my grandfather and how much he appreciated Western movies and would have appreciated this conestoga wagon, parked in front of a tourist shopping center on the way to Zion. As I’ve mentioned in my About page, I believe he ended up here in the west because he always liked the films of Sergio Leone. What I didn’t mention is that he would fall asleep most times to the music from The Godfather. An Italian of limited interests, my grandfather!

Chicken Shack

I wanted to try to stump Joe with another old car but decided to post an old shack instead. I just loved how the white vignette works on this b & w shot.

Hope you do, too!

Everybody there is having a ball
They don’t care that the place looks like a wreck
Down at the place called the Chicken Shack”

Pine Valley Chapel

I have a problem with Baptism, especially in the Mormon faith. I am not a Mormon, nor a very religious person. I have prayed, but not for myself. Those moments I feel closest to a deity is when I am out in nature, never in a church, temple, or chapel. When I was much younger, I remember walking into St. Patrick’s Cathedral and whispering, “oh, my God” at the magnificence of the interior. My ears were dutifully boxed by my father! (I did not press charges as no permanent damage was sustained.) So, as for baptism in the Mormon faith it occurs when the child is 8 years old and said child has shown faith and repentance. Repentance of what? What has a child of 8 accomplished, good or bad, that he or she must repent? And does an eight year old have faith? Or does he/she attend church/temple because his/her parent says he/she must? (I’m getting tired of this he/she business. From now on I will use the female gender only because, well, I like my female gender to come with a little sin!) The reason I single out the Mormon’s is only because I have recently been witness to a baptism where the daughter was immersed (no sprinkling of a little holy water for the Mormons but a tiny pool where the father dunks his sinful child under and holds her there for the balance of the prayer). This is one of the nicest 8-year-old girls I have ever met. Has she sinned? Told a lie? Probably. But is any lie evil enough to warrant her being forced to bathe in front of friends and family? (OK, she is totally dressed so it’s not like she’s really bathing. I just wanted to make sure you were paying attention). And she’s dressed in white for goodness’ sake. Isn’t white the universal sign of innocence? If she is innocent, has she sinned? Must she be immersed under water and ruin her hair do? I don’t know. I just have so many unanswered questions!

(If you, too, have questions, please visit me at Photos By Emilio where I have lot’s of answers. I just need someone to ask the questions!)
