The Little Things

Sometimes it’s the little things we remember about a building. Maybe it’s the door handles, or the tile work in the bathrooms. Perhaps it’s the light switches or the cabinet pulls in the kitchen. These are the little things down at the human scale where we can touch them, and they often speak to us in ways that are more meaningful than tall columns or dramatic arches and domed ceilings. This ornate offering is a detail of a gate post I came upon in Washington, Connecticut.

The small cafe in the local natural food store that serves as my office away from home is frequently the scene of spiritual readings, and occasionally used for rehearsing plays. Sometimes the critics can be less than enthusiastic.

Panasonic GX85 with one of my favorite lenses, the Panasonic 20mm f1.7. I used the camera’s ‘L Mono’ jpeg black and white conversion and in-camera square crop.

Richmond Station

As much as anything this was a test of my new Panasonic Lumix GX85 and the tiny Olympus 9-18mm lens. At 9mm I see just a hint of barrel distortion, but not enough for me to worry about. This was handheld at f7.1 and 1/30 of a second. The in-body stabilization has proven very effective. I’m happy.
