It’s not uncommon to hear people describe B&W images as dramatic, moody, even ominous.  Yet the day  was bright, the sky a deep blue, and the grass so green under the shining sun, and my goal was to reflect that in this image.  How’d I do?

Nikon D7000, 35mm f/1.8 lens, 30 sec @ f/22, ISO 640

I have a wonderful friend who has graciously let me play with her Nikon D7000. When rain ruined my outdoor shooting plans, there was no way I was going to let that stop me from using the camera. In the spirit of the saying “necessity is the mother of invention,” I just paired it with my tripod and went on a photo safari around my house. This was one of my favorite shots from the day.

Thanks, Beth, I just love it! I guess I should probably get it back to you about now. Withdrawal is looming … big time.

For a look at how I post-processed a similar shot in color, visit VisualVenturing.com. I’d be interested to hear which photo you like better.

Tools Of The Trade

CoffeeCup

Fujifilm X-T1 and Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R Lens – 1/9 @ f/2.8 – ISO 200

This is an old porcelain coated metal coffee cup sitting on a boat builders desk.  It seemed like this was part of his toolkit. I loved the way the porcelain is worn off the handle from use.

One of the many ruins that dot the Mojave National Preserve. Situated close to the edge of a huge sandy area named the Devil’s Playground – dunes and salt flats that stretch over 40 miles and merge with several dry lake beds around Baker, CA. Kelso is a small settlement that looks as if it has been largely unchanged for many years. The town is built around a large Spanish-style building; formerly a railway depot. It now contains the Mojave National Preserve visitor center. Kelso once had a population of 2,000, and was at one time both an important railway stop, providing water for steam trains on the Los Angeles – Salt Lake City route, and a center for iron ore mining, but is now nearly empty.

(Wo)Man’s Best Friend

Dog sleeping in pools of light from a window
She’s mostly deaf, losing more of her sight weekly, turning grayer each month. But this soon-to-be 15-year-old miniature pinscher is still my loyal companion. And I love watching her as she curls up and naps in the little spots of light and warmth that she finds around the house. Love you, Brandy, old girl…

Hoda Kotb Talk

Hoda Kotb

I took this photo today, a beautiful warm September Sunday here in NYC up on 5th Ave at the funeral of the wonderful Joan Rivers.  Hoda Kotb, television news anchor and TV host is talking to NBC News, the tiny hint of fuzzy microphone in bottom right-hand corner, letting us know how beautiful the ceremony was, full of tears, laughter, just what Joan would have wanted.  And I suspect she might have enjoyed the cute little man in the background of the shot with that smile of his.  I know I do!

You keep saying you got something for me
Something you call love but confess
You’ve been a’messin’ where you shouldn’t ‘ve been a’messin’
And now someone else is getting all your best
Well, these boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you…
