Akershus Fortress Abstract

Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city.  Construction is believed to have begun in in the late 1290s by King Haakon V.  For centuries, the fortress withstood numerous Swedish led sieges. It did surrender without conflict to the Nazis in 1940.

Castle near the border in Scotland

A photo from my recent trip to the UK. I was out exploring the Northumbrian countryside with my son and my X100F, and came across this castle… It was a good day.

… I was in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz with some friends for an extended weekend. While nearby, we made a trip to the castle Burg Eltz. This construction of this iconic castle was started back in the 12th century. Since then, it was never conquered or destroyed.

As expected, you can find the castle on top of a hill. But, this hill is surrounded by many other hills which are even higher. So, you can’t see it from a distance and you can’t oversee the surrounding area. This is very different from other castles.
