A Midsummer’s Daydream

What started out as a photo of the reflection in the mirror, became something totally different.  Edges began to blur, light became liquid and reality was open to interpretation.

Camera: unknown, original settings: unknown, artistic effects done in Photoshop, further tweaking in Silver Efex Pro 2 and finished in Lightroom CC Classic.

One of the gorillas at the Como Park zoo in St. Paul, Minnesota.  I can’t help wondering what he is thinking as we all stand around and stare at him as he stares back at us.

Late evening along the St. Louis River as it flows through Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota.  This beautiful park is home to amazing rock formations, rapids and waterfalls.  A trip across the famous swinging bridge will take you to several vantage points to view the river and allows access to hiking trails in the park.

The river creates the patterns, the photographer documents and adds human touches to the creation.  Taken on a small eddy on the edge of the St. Louis River near Duluth, Minnesota.

Fury

Fury

A solid northeast wind with all of Lake Superior to gather ahead of the gale means furious waves at the western end of the lake.  On Saturday, April 14th, we had such a day and it became a tourist event with all accessible locations crowded with sightseers…and lots of photographers.  At one spot there was even surfers.

Canon 5DS, Canon EF 28-135mm, ISO 50, 135mm, f/10, 1/50 sec.  Processed through Adobe Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro 2.

As I was driving back from Silver Bay, Minnesota where I did some long exposure photography, I noticed these old pier supports and decided to investigate.  They are in a small bay where the Split Rock River runs into Lake Superior.  I really enjoyed how the ice had formed on the wood and wished I had taken more time to study them further.  At the time I was frustrated by my variable neutral density filter creating artifacts in some of the images which meant I couldn’t get the creamy water effect I was after.  I plan to pay a visit to the camera store where I purchased the filter and see what they have to say.
