My wife spends a lot of her free time knitting. This sock was underway and lying on the arm of the sofa where she had left it the night before. The shot just came to me while I was getting ready for work. I just happened to have my Nikon on the table so shot off a couple of handheld shots.

A quick shutter speed allowed me to “freeze” the water in the fountain and capture this young woman mid-stride.
The long shadows of this beautiful fountain caught my eye first, but then I decided to explore the effects of different shutter speeds on the wonderful water features. Once I decided to “freeze” the action, I realized I wanted more in the frame and waited for the “right” someone to come along. Bicyclists, joggers, businessmen all passed by. But it was the patterns of this young woman’s ensemble that led me to press the shutter button.

I’ve been invited by Joe to post on Monochromia for few weeks and I’ve found the idea interesting. I think it’s a good thing to reconnect with B&W photography so I will accept the invitation (…and the challenge).
Just between you and me… I find it quite hard to create B&W photos, in quantities. How I feel right now is that I have to pull out the most attractive part of a picture, meaning the colors and the whole dimension that comes with it. As an example (the first picture with the chateau) the tree is actually pink… 😉 So in this way, that is a real challenge to me. Everything must now lie in the structure, the framing and the subject.
But at the same time I think it’s funny because when I started photography, I couldn’t publish color photography because I wasn’t able to get the right colors I wanted

Thompson’s Opera House, also known as the Gem Theater, is a small theater building in Pioche, Nevada. The Opera House is a wood frame building built in 1873, attached roughly to the adjoining brick Gem Theater, a 1937 masonry cinema. The theater was built in September 1873 and featured a performance of Pygmalion and Galatea for its opening night, with a cast of professional actors from San Francisco. The Opera House screened its first silent movie in 1915. In 1935 the Opera House was renamed the Gem Theater, but in 1937 a new Gem Theater was built next door expressly for movies.
The Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is one of three 19th century theaters remaining in Nevada.
