25TH Annual Southern Paiute Veterans Pow-Wow

Since at least 1100 A.D., the Southern Paiute lived across southeastern Nevada and neighboring states. To survive the desert, they drank from springs, hunted wild game and harvested plants.

Today, the Southern Paiutes operate the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. In addition, the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza with its 2,500-square-foot casino and fireworks store greets visitors on their way to Valley of Fire State Park.

The Moapa Paiutes also are developing the first large-scale solar project on tribal land, which will provide tribal revenue and jobs.

Beamer’s 25

The beloved, now retired long time  Virginia Tech Head Football Coach, Frank Beamer, has a restaurant called Beamer’s 25 in Roanoke, and it’s a fun place to stop during a motorcycle ride.

He wore the number 25 when he played the game.

He was a great coach and is a great man.

I don’t know how many people today remember Hoagy Carmichael, and yet whenever I come across a scene like this I am immediately reminded of his songs. Though he did not write the lyrics (those were by Stuart Gorrell), that line, “Georgia on my mind“, or the line “moonlight through the pines“, it’s Hoagy’s melody that echoes in my head.

If you have seen, and can remember the movie, “To Have, and Have Not”, the movie where Humphrey Bogart meets Lauren Bacall (all you have to do is whistle), you might also remember Hoagy as the cigarette smoking piano player. Maybe too, you will remember that Hoagy composed one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century. According to Wikipedia, “Stardust” has been recorded more that 1,500 times.

Odd how a stroll in the moonlight can have that effect on me.
