First Day Hike

First Day Hikes is a program of free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day, offered by the 50 state park systems of the United States. The program was started in Massachusetts in 1992 under America’s State Parks and went Nationwide in 2012. The hikes are intended to promote an alternative way of celebrating the New Year by going outside, getting some exercise, and experiencing nature and history.

High Bridge

High Bridge Trail is a 31 mile Rails to Trails pathway located in a Virginia State Park of the same name. The bridge itself is 2400 ft long and rises 125 ft above the Appomattox River. Built in 1883, the High Bridge is the longest recreational bridge in Virginia and among the longest in the nation. The bridge is listed as a Virginia Historic Landmark.
