This small flock of flamingos is part of the most northern flamingo colony. Yes, you read right, these are free birds. Their ancestors escaped from captivity. 4 kinds of flamingos are living together in western Germany. In fall, they migrate first to Belgium, and when it becomes colder, they head south with the final destination in southern France and Spain.

Andre, Black And White Photography, PhotographyWesterhever Lighthouse
Andre, Black And White Photography, PhotographyThis is a quite iconic lighthouse at the German north-sea coast in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It’s used in quite a lot of commercials. When used in commercials, there is usually not so much landscape in the frame.
Nowadays, the two houses beside the lighthouse are used for nature preservation purposes. Huge portions of the Wadden Sea are part of the National Park German Wadden Sea, founded in 1985. That National Park covers the costs of the North Sea of the German states Lower Saxony, Hamburg (since 2011), and Schleswig-Holstein and continues in Denmark (since 2014).

Sankt Peter-Ording Beach houses
Andre, Black And White Photography, PhotographyAt the beach of St-Peter-Ording in Schleswig-Holstein, you can find these iconic houses. This beach is the broadest in Germany. Up to 2 kilometers from the surf to the dunes. This is, because of the gently sloping beach. Connecting to the beach, you have more than a kilometer walk from the dyke through the salt meadows and dunes to reach the beach. For visitors, they have established horse-drawn carriages to transport them to and back from the beach.
Because of the broad beach, one can quite easily be surprised by the rising flood when being too far from the safe part of the beach. Therefore, these stilt houses are set up to give you shelter from the sea and where you can wait for low tide to walk back to the town. You can find a couple of them distributed over the beach. Some of them even have a restaurant.
This image is taken at 300mm with my 35mm camera. So, you have an idea of how big the distances are here.
