During our long Minnesota winters, I search out ice formations wherever I can find them. I may spend hours seeking these little treasures hoping to capture a few that will become unique abstract compositions. On this particular outing, this image out of many is a standout.

Ice coats everything along the shore of Lake Superior this time of year. If one is careful, you can creep around on the icy shoreline and rocks and find little treasures.

A small section of the Superior Hiking Trail near my home in Duluth Minnesota. For those unfamiliar with the trail, it runs about 310 miles along northern Minnesota between the Canadian border and the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, most of which is along the hills above Lake Superior.

I’ve had New York on my mind lately as my wife wants to attend a writing conference there in February. Although I would not be attending the conference, I would look forward to meeting with other members of Monochromia and doing a bit of photography in the city. My last visit was in July of 2011 and I had only five hours to take in as much as possible. This time I would have several days to explore and, hopefully, have knowledgeable guides to show me around…hint, hint!
Although there are two very different subjects in this composition, one soft, the other hard, the hard is softened by the reflection of the sky and clouds. This also serves to add texture to the hardness of the human created structure, the texture being captured and constrained by the edges of the building.

Somewhere, in the middle of North Dakota, is place that is off limits to the curious.

For several years I’ve been driving past this bus parked in the trees along Highway 23 outside of Duluth and finally stopped to captured a few photos. Timing was important as I wanted to get the photos in the morning when the sun was at the correct angle to light the bus just right. That meant being out somewhat early; this image was captured at 7:21AM.

This week my thoughts are on water as I will be spending several days in the BWCAW in northern Minnesota. Gooseberry Falls is along the north shore of Lake Superior and along the route we will take to get to our destination. Gooseberry Falls is a favorite of Minnesotans , visitors from around the country and the world.
Several years ago the Ira Bong bridge was closed, one direction at a time, for improvements. Since this bridge happens to have a bike/pedestrian path that allows riders to cross between Duluth and Superior, I was able to go out a couple of times and have half the bridge to myself. This gave me a rare opportunity to capture images that otherwise would be impossible to get, at least legally. I made two trips during that time, one daytime and one nighttime. Of all of the images, this remains one of my favorites.
