From a summer holiday a couple of years ago. The local beach near to where my sister lives in the UK has these small huts which are well maintained, and function as a home away from home for the lucky few. I liked the clouds that day they always can be used to add a little drama to a shot. I deliberately took a low angle and shot upwards . I love the diverging verticals of the huts too like they are being squeezed ever so slightly.

20180516-untitled shoot-11-Edit-2As some of you may know, I have more than a passing interest in cycling. On the 16th of May the professional “Tour of Norway” passed my way. I arrived early at my chosen vantage point at least an hour before the riders turned up. People were already out and about eagerly awaiting the riders and,given the next day was a national holiday everyone was in a festive mood.

If you have ever wondered what would make a person stand by the roadside to watch 30 seconds of cycling go past haven’t thought about the fun had by the supporters beforehand. The chance of seeing a superstar whizz past is a bonus. In no other sport can Joe-public get so close to their idols.

If you are left wondering whom this Edvald is I’m talking about one of Norways cycling superstars Edvald Boasson Hagen.

The Tour of Norway passed close to my doorstep on Wednesday this week. Being I am a big cycling fan I placed myself where I knew they would have to take a sharp lefthand turn. I lay in the grass with my camera ready and shot off a load of images. After the leaders and the main Peloton had blasted past a straggler from the Uno-X team came into view. He threw his empty bottle away and that was my souvenir of the day…plus this shot. So whomever you were (I didn’t get your number) thank you.

Yes next week it’ll be the 17th of May, National Day. For one day the whole of Norway is in party mood. Parades, National dress, ice cream, marching bands, and waving royalty, the whole works. It’s always fun to watch with everyone in their finery.

So Think of Norway on the 17th, and maybe raise a glass to celebrate with us.

Max soaks up the sunshine

Apologies to those that may have already seen this shot on my Flickr feed/Blog. However I want to tell you dear reader that. the difference as I see it between analog and digital photography isn’t just the amount of exposures you can take. You then have to put the film in the tank (In total darkness), and develop it, and then scan the negative which has to be hung to dry for five hours. Hopefully the scan was relatively dust free, and you then end up with a scanned shot which looks usable, maybe. I end up wondering why I put myself thought this heartache in the first place. I should just sell my old stuff and go completely digital.

I’ll tell you a secret…
…it’s the sense of achievement when I’ve overcome all the potential stumbling blocks,  and end up with a shot I’m proud of. I can tell you that the negative I made this shot from was far from perfect. I spent a while digitally dodging and burning it, and then printing it out on A3 paper… Magic, pure and simple.

Those three girls again… I walked past them again on Thursday and this time got up close and personal with the middle one. Almost demonic shot at 24mm.

I had to have a stiff drink afterwards…. 😉

…to go back to real film. None of this namby-pamby pixel nonsense…Well at least I met the urge half-way. To be a little serious a moment I just wanted to put a couple of films through my Hasselblad. I’ve finally found a local shop that processes C41 film. This shot however isn’t C41. I wanted to test the chemicals I had as well to see if they were ok.

Above you see a result. A table top shot of my pocket watch and my old but usable Yashica TLR.

For you film types still out there here’s what I did.

Camera: Hasselbald 203FE

Lens: Carl Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 FE on an E32 Extension tube.

Exposure: Unrecorded f/11 at something. Natural light, slow enough to blur the second hand on the watch.

Film: Rollei RPX100

Dev: 59 mins stand-developed (The lazy mans development method.Pour in and forget for an hour).in Adox Ardonal mixed 1+100. fixed and washed as normal.

Scan: Epson V700 using Silverfast SW. Using a Betterscanning.com holder.

Everything else Lightroom.

 

Learning to ride

My wife lends a helping hand to my nephews daughter while she was learning to ride without training wheels.

It’s about time I got back into film again. I have enough of it in the freezer and I do enjoy using it. I really feeling like I’m making the picture. It can be heartbreaking at times. However the rewards are,well worth it in my opinion.

I do occasionally print my work. I’ve never really got used to not seeing pictures on paper. It’s almost a tactile thing like reading books. It’s nice to have something physical to look at not just some electrons that have arranged themselves on a screen. I took my time in choosing a printer with good black and white properties and finally fell for an Epson 3880 which takes A3+ sheets. It’s four years old now and still does a great job.
