It was announced recently that the Tall Ship Celebration would be returning to Duluth, MN this summer. Two years ago it had moved to another city along Lake Superior but, we are happy to have it back in our harbor in 2025. One ship that won’t be returning, that was part of the 2010 celebration, is the Bounty. She sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012.

It takes a bit of navigating to move about safely on the ice covered ledge rock of Lake Superior.

Light, water and shape add to the textured rock along the shore of Lake Superior.

A cut opens in the cloud cover and lets a curtain of light through.

On the morning I went out to shoot some photos of ice, I slipped on ice next to my truck as I was loading my camera bag. I landed on my stainless steel coffee mug, which hit me right around the left kidney. Ouch! I managed to make out and grab a few shots before going home to recover with an ice pack.

It may seem that the water is steaming, and it sort of is. When Lake Superior is warmer than the air above it, you get sea smoke. It was -5 F (-15 C) the morning I captured this image.
