Brent Mail is a professional photographer from Australia who recently interviewed Cole Thompson, a fine art photographer from the United States. It is a great interview. Please go take a peek! Among many of the things he said that resonated with me concerns the Rule Of Thirds:

“I have my own “Rule of Thirds”. (I don’t like Rules of Photography so I make up my own).

My Rule of Thirds says a great image is comprised of one-third vision, one-third the shot, and one-third processing.

The vision is what drives the other two-thirds.

It drives the shot because when I know what I want the final image to look like, that directs how I capture the image.

Likewise with the processing, which is where I do the majority of the creative work on the image, the vision drives it.”

Get used to his name. Cole Thompson. I expect to be quoting more of his interview from time to time!

Belgian Beer and Mussels

What a treat it was to be invited to spend an evening with good friends, sharing fresh mussels and delicious belgian beer!   Yum!!  There are not many better ways to end the work day.

To be honest, I’ve often converted to B&W when the color and lighting of an image just weren’t right.  Involvement with Monochromia has encouraged me to think sans color when I am out and about with my camera, and to actively search for images that will celebrate B&W photography.  I had a feeling that mussels and beer might provide good subjects.  What do you think?

It seems that people often think of B&W photography as mostly dramatic, moody, and serious, so today I wanted to show the fun.  Those who know me will not be surprised by that!

Nikon D200 and 50mm AF-S f/1.8 Lens – 1/5000 @ f/2.2 – ISO 100

On this particular day I was doing my walk around with a little different camera than I normally would use.  This time I had an old Nikon D200 that already had 185,000 shutter actuations on it and a 50mm 1.8 lens.  I guess you could say it was well broken in.

I had approached Devin and was talking to him about that great hat he was wearing as a way to break the ice and start a conversation with him.  I finally felt comfortable enough and asked him if he wouldn’t mind if I took a street portrait of him and he gladly said “sure”.

Sometimes people agree to a photograph after having a conversation with them and making them feel at ease.
