Nesting boxes

I was struck with the impression that these three buildings were like Russian nesting dolls, one just fits inside the other.

Fence with irises

Fence with irises© Steven Willard

This is one of those situations where the eye sees differently from the camera. From the car, I saw the white iris blossoms separate from the white pickets and the stone corner post, both of which I have photographed before under different conditions. The trick of the eye, however, was that I managed to isolate the blossoms from the background at least until I got out of the car with my camera and looked through the viewfinder. At that point it was obvious that the blossoms were going to be lost against the background. My eyes had tricked me. It reminded me of all the portraits I had made with phone poles coming out of the subjects heads.

Well, I went ahead and took the picture anyway, knowing that it wasn’t going to work. The strange thing is that It kind of does anyway. That, I didn’t expect. It is as though, being familiar with the blossoms, and the pickets, and the stone, my mind could separate them, make order out of disorder. Does that make sense?

Lunch Break

I just happened upon this scene when all the workmen had taken a lunch break. I rather fancy the pagoda-like quality of the staging, and the way the metal planking bounced light into the shadows.

A black and white version of an image I posted on the the first day of Spring at my personal blog https://stevenwillardimages.wordpress.com. The gloomy nature of the weather seemed apropro of our current situation. I hope that this “Spring” leads to a better summer for everyone. Stay safe.

This is a five shot stitch from my Olympus OMD EM1 MkII and the Zuiko Pro f2.8 40-150mm zoom. The images were stitched in Photostitcher® and further processed in Stacker® and Snapseed®

Frozen pond with grass

The nearby pond has been frozen over for more than a month. In that time it has partially thawed and refrozen, been snowed on several times, and been rained upon. Each event has left its mark as textures and patterns that change daily and offer an endless variety of subjects for a photographer.

Perhaps not the very last leaf, but near enough on this Japanese maple that resides in our courtyard. No question that Winter is here.
