SoHo pedestrians illuminated by sidelight

SoHo, New York City

For those not familiar with New York City, “SoHo” stands for “south of Houston Street” (pronounced “houseton).” It’s a trendy area in lower Manhattan, sporting pricey boutiques and charming atmosphere, including streets paved with “Belgian blocks.” And, this day, it was alive with long shadows of late afternoon.

Freeze Frame

A quick shutter speed allowed me to “freeze” the water in the fountain and capture this young woman mid-stride.

The long shadows of this beautiful fountain caught my eye first, but then I decided to explore the effects of different shutter speeds on the wonderful water features. Once I decided to “freeze” the action, I realized I wanted more in the frame and waited for the “right” someone to come along. Bicyclists, joggers, businessmen all passed by. But it was the patterns of this young woman’s ensemble that led me to press the shutter button.

Late afternoon in the neighborhood known as Little Italy. “Authentic” Italian restaurants line either side of the street. My father lunched at one that stated on the menu it was John Gotti’s favorite restaurant.

High praise, indeed!

“Don’t carry a gun. It’s nice to have them close by, but don’t carry them. You might get arrested.”
