First Day Hikes is a program of free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day, offered by the 50 state park systems of the United States. The program was started in Massachusetts in 1992 under America’s State Parks and went Nationwide in 2012. The hikes are intended to promote an alternative way of celebrating the New Year by going outside, getting some exercise, and experiencing nature and history.
