Bending Steel

I’ve been walking past a particular set of windows that reflect the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth for too long without capturing an image.  Today I made a trip to do just that.  After cropping to eliminate the window frame, tweaking a bit in Lightroom, I exported to Silver Efex Pro 2 for the finishing conversion.  Finally, I spun it around a few times and hung it out to dry.

Superior’s Wrath

When Gitche Gummi gets her undies in a bunch, you need to give her a wide berth.  Today’s (Oct. 10) high winds once again stirred up the “Big Lake” and she put on a show for those brave or foolish enough to venture near for a closer look.  Waves were reported to be as high as 28 feet and much damage was done to the beaches and lakewalk. I also learned today that my current rain gear is not up to the task of these conditions and I need to carry more towels for keeping lenses dry.  Ultimately I could not keep up with the spray and had to quit.   I was totally soaked through my rain gear and all my camera gear needed to be dried out. Even with all that, it was, as always, an exhilarating experience.

Calm Crossing

Several years ago the Ira Bong bridge was closed, one direction at a time, for improvements.  Since this bridge happens to have a bike/pedestrian path that allows riders to cross between Duluth and Superior, I was able to go out a couple of times and have half the bridge to myself.  This gave me a rare opportunity to capture images that otherwise would be impossible to get, at least legally.  I made two trips during that time, one daytime and one nighttime.  Of all of the images, this remains one of my favorites.

Fury

Fury

A solid northeast wind with all of Lake Superior to gather ahead of the gale means furious waves at the western end of the lake.  On Saturday, April 14th, we had such a day and it became a tourist event with all accessible locations crowded with sightseers…and lots of photographers.  At one spot there was even surfers.

Waiting for Better Weather

When warmer weather returns, people will once again sit and enjoy the scenery from this bench.  For now, other than some intrepid ice anglers, no one is about, all is quiet, all is frozen.
