I photographed this beauty at the annual birding festival on Galveston Island along the Gulf of Mexico. This Yellow-crowned Night Heron flew over and perched in a tree right in front of us. See the twig in its beak. It is breeding season and nests need maintenance.

Sort of like “The Mysterious Days of the Night Heron: a Big Bird Mystery.”βYes, that could actually sound like a title I would read on my Kindle. How fun!β;)

Thank you Jane. The yellow-crowned night heron is, indeed, an elegant thing.
We are very fortunate to have Galveston Island with its birding riches. There is a wonderful variety of wading and shore birds on Galveston Island β almost every variety of egret and heron; spoonbills; ibis; avocets and stilts; and wintering sandhill cranes.
