Said to be 500 years old this Southern live oak tree produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. This 66 foot tall tree located in John’s Island just south of Charleston in South Carolina is a magnificent example of the wonder of nature and is venerated by the locals and has given rise to many a folk lore during its long existence. If ever in the neighborhood make sure you visit with your widest lens in hand as you will surely need it to capture this beauty.

      Thank you so much.
Yes, only seeing it in person will make one realize, like you do, the breadth of this living wonder.
I had to visit the second day with my 10-20mm wide angle to get this shot and still it was not wide enough to get anywhere close to it all!!!
My wife stayed in the car and was not so impressed with my obsession with the tree!

If this tree could only talk we might get a lesson in American History I feel to be honest, it’s unbelievable to have a living tree that’s lasted so many years.
      The wonder of nature!

This really is an incredible image and tree AJ 🙂 There is a similar aged tree at Bayard Cutting Arboretum but because of kids carving their initials into it they had to fence it off. Outstanding work.

Thank you Joe. I appreciate it.
It’s a pity some people don’t show respect and realize that we need to leave behind certain things for the next generation. Selfishness overrides the better qualities we should demonstrate far too often.
I will keep my eyes open during my next ride to the Bayard.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful image. The oak trees in the south are indeed majestic…regrettably their roots are rather shallow and leave them vulnerable to being uprooted during storms.

Thank you. Last month was my first visit South and our choice for our 10th anniversary spent between Charleston and Savannah.
I found the live oak majestic and the Spanish moss enthralling!
