I just don’t tire of images of New York City. For information about this wonderful vantage point and a more panoramic view, see my earlier post, The Big Apple.

Atop the Empire State Building

Lower Manhattan viewed from top of the Empire State BuildingLooking south to Lower Manhattan

(Scheduled post) My last aerial view of lower Manhattan was from the Top of the Rock Observation Deck on the 70th floor of the GE Building in Rockefeller Center. This view is from the 86th Floor Observation Deck of the Empire State Building. In the distance is One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower); at 6:00 is the triangular Flatiron Building, bordered by Broadway on the left and 5th Avenue on the right, with Madison Square Park (at the bottom of the frame) just a block away.

Urban Moment

Empire State Building street view from outside Penn Station

Taking advantage of the last 15 minutes I had before needing to head inside Penn Station, I waited … and waited … for the perfect pedestrian to help frame this shot of the Empire State Building. And then this young woman stepped out of a taxi. It was a great way to end a great visit to NYC!

Love in Grand Central Station

A couple poses for a Grand Central Station photo shoot

Grand Central Station in New York City is a font of photo ops (though I wish tripod use was allowed!). Spending time there with fellow Monochromians Joe Giordano and Patti Fogarty was worlds of fun. And in the midst of all my “oohing” and “aahing,” I spied this couple posing for what I figured was engagement photos. Of course, I just had to get in on the action!

Window Peeping

Confession: I’ve always enjoyed window peeping. Walking out of the restaurant after dinner last night, I was struck by the lighted scenes in the windows, the street lamps, and the rising moon. I couldn’t resist pulling out my Fuji.

Radio City Music Hall, New York City

Most visitors to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall are familiar with its front entrance on 6th Avenue. Walking down the Avenue, I spotted this side entrance on 51st Street and loved the angles and lines (and the accompanying NYC cabs).

Central Park East

View from Wollman Rink of Central Park East NYC skyline

New York City’s Central Park provides some amazing views of the city that surrounds it.

This view from Victorian Gardens Amusement Park (the summer operation of the famous Wollman ice skating rink) captures the iconic and luxurious Pierre Hotel on the right, the General Motors Building in the middle (one of the few structures in Manhattan to occupy a full city block), and behind it, the 1396-foot residential tower called 432 Park Avenue.

At the time of its completion in 2014, 432 Park is the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere and the third tallest building in the United States. It is the second tallest building in New York City, behind One World Trade Center, and ahead of the Empire State Building. It also boasts a $95 million penthouse!

Batman Supersized!

(Color version on Visual Venturing.) While roaming the streets of New York City with Joe and Patti, we crossed paths with this fantastic billboard at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue advertising the Batman Arkham Dark Knight video game. The NYC tourist bus in front was a happy coincidence.

Quintessentially Paris

The Seine with Pont Neuf and Eiffel Tower in the background.

(Color version on Visual Venturing.) A favored Paris tourist experience is to view the city from the waters of the Seine. Here, one of the legendary “Bateaux-Mouches” sails toward scenic Pont Neuf, while the Eiffel Tower and the Institut de France beckon in the background.

And, now, for those of us old enough to remember The Kingston Trio, I can’t get this song out of my head! (If you click on the link to listen, I guarantee you’ll never think of Paris or the Seine again without humming this song 😉)

The Seine

One night along the river at St. Germain de Pre,
I first met my beloved at a small sidewalk cafe.
We walked along the river, the shadows passing by
but we only saw each other, the shining water and the sky.
The Seine, the Seine, when will I again meet her there,
greet her there on the moonlit banks of the Seine?
Standing there across the river, mid sound of horn and tram,
in all her quiet beauty, the cathedral Notre Dame,
And as we passed beside her, I said a little prayer
that when this dream was over, I’d awake and find you there.
We walked along the river, ’till dawn was coming nigh.
Beneath the Eiffel Tower we said our last good-bye.
There on that splendid morning, I left you all in tears
and the beauty of that hour will shine within me through the years
The Seine, the Seine, when will I again, meet her there,
greet her there on the moonlit banks of the Seine.

(Equally as stunning in color on Visual Venturing.) The perks of accompanying my husband on a recent business trip to New York City: staying in a Manhattan hotel with this amazing lobby. Sitting on the opposite side waiting for our names to be called for lunch in the hotel restaurant, I just had to take a picture — as much for the stunning mirrored architecture as for the two suited gentlemen busy on their respective electronic devices.
