This was shot from the roof of an apartment building in Johannesburg, shortly after sunset.  The high-contrast, textured shadows created by a nearby street-light caught my eye, leading to a low-key black and white image.  I added the clean diagonal line in the top left (actually the trail from a car’s headlights) as a juxtaposition against the gritty shadows.

Late Night on a Pier

It was a dark and gloomy night, the air thick like soup.  The lights carved a path out onto the pier, guiding my steps to a destination lost in the fog…

Street Car Yard

I love my tripod but sometimes there is an image that just needs to be taken, and it doesn’t matter how dark and tripod-less you are that moment. I took this on a Canon 7D at 1000 ISO!! With all the fine details, and especially all the black space I was super worried that this shot would be way too noisy. Though, as luck would have it, my camera handled this light level just perfectly, and I can’t believe I was able to get it so sharp at only 1/15th of a second.

Anyway, I won’t ramble – I just think this is one of my all time favorite images. I can’t wait for you all to see it.

Unbalanced

I love the way this shot, turned out. It’s originally a color photo but I think this black and white conversion works almost as well.

This photo has an extremely unbalanced composition, but I really feel like it works – at least for me. I usually find myself drawn to the symmetry and regular shapes. This is another departure for me – I find that when I look at this photograph I find myself focusing on the black, and imagining all kinds of dramatic scenes taking place in the shadows, just out of view.

Bah, who am I kidding, everything I’m imaging here would look better in a Mel Brooks movie.
