According to the park website, “about 5 people” have died due to falls from Angels Landing in the 100 years since the park was established. About 5? Yeah, maybe last week! This is the most dangerous hike I have ever attempted. Hanging off the side of a cliff by a chain while trying to find a foothold is not my idea of fun.
Only five deaths?
You’ve got to be kidding me.

If you’re curious. I work in Zion, the answer is 11 people 🙂

Thanks, Merissa. I still find it hard to believe, but then, my wife made the climb and came back down in the dark. Just caught the last bus out.

I have to admit I agree with Jeff Bosie and Timothy Price, my thoughts went immediately to some of Adams classics when I saw this shot from Emilio, great work indeed!

Getting a little Ansel Adams like. Great photo. Where’s your sense of adventure? Sounds like a great time.

I agree with everyone, the lighting is remarkable! I also like the angle you took.
I don’t understand why people go climbing, I did once that was enough!

I can understand why boys and men climb. It has to be the testosterone. Look at me. But women? My wife says she loves the excitement, the feeling of danger. Weird!

Wow, sounds like a very challenging hike Emilio. Regardless of the not finishing the hike, it put you in this amazing spot to capture this incredible photo!

It is a terrifying experience, but such an adventure too! Walter’s wiggles are wild and that view as you crest the fin, stepping out into and within the canyon, it is unbelievable. The feeling of being so minuscule in this grand view is one of my favorite experiences, Zion did not disappoint in this effect. This photograph is stunning Emilio! I love the light and shadows pulling me in and out of this photograph and you have brilliantly captured the epic massiveness of the cliffs there with such a unique look. Oh I love it.

My idea of adventure differs from yours. And from my wife’s. I’d much rather watch an adventure movie then risk a fall that would most likely kill me. But then think of the photos I could take on the way down. Wow! 😀

Worth it for the stunning photo!
I fondly remember my trip to Zion National Park a few years back – it is lovely out that side of the world.

It certainly is beautiful. But this photo was taken on the trail coming down from the mountain. On more solid ground. So I really didn’t have to risk life nor limb to get this shot. Glad you like it, though.

Gorgeous lighting and shadow detail on this image Emilio 🙂 If I took that hike they would have to MediVac me out of there. Exquisite work my friend.

Thanks, Joe. I actually gave up about 3/4 of the way through. I kept telling Lynn I had nothing to prove. So I went back down and she continued on her own. I kept going over in my head what I was going to tell her kids when she didn’t show up. But she did show up. About two hours later.

Two hours later! I’ll bet you were anxious about that.
Stunning image.
That “about” is an interesting term …

Ok, if you must know, it was 1 hour 58 minutes and 27 seconds later that she got back. I was working on the revisions to the eulogy I was writing for her. Guess that can wait now!
