Thank you so much! This is a diurnal butterfly with wings that reflect black or powder blue, depending on the angle, with bright red spots to warn predators that it’s poisonous. What you see is not a caterpillar but a piece of peeled skin from the thistle that’s inverted. I like Burnets as they’re not quite as skittish as other butterflies, although they’re very challenging to expose properly. They’re best photographed with a bit of fill-in flash from a twin-light.
Oh wow! Beautiful macro ‘seeing’! What’s happening here, is this a catapiller with previous generation moth? Or just a random by chance interaction?
