To reach the top of Hawksbill Mountain, you must accomplish a 50-minute moderate to strenuous hike from the service road. As you yield the trail to hikers on their way down, you often hear ‘it’s worth the effort’. And indeed, once you complete your ascent, you are awarded with a spectacular view of Linville Gorge.
Taken in mid-October, the peak fall foliage was still a week or so away. Even with some moderate foliage color, this image seemed to work better in monochrome.

Thanks Joe, I have a long history with this mountain. My first visit was in the mid 70s when I rappelled off the side of the mountain with my Scout troop. 😉
