Nightlight

Door at Alcatraz lit at night

This was one of the last images I shot while visiting Alcatraz Island last fall. I was making my way from the prison down the walkway to the pier to catch the last ferry back to San Francisco and the simplicity of this vignette caught my eye. It’s actually one of my favorite photos from that evening.

  1. This is a great example of how important lighting is to set a mood and tell a story. And for impact. Imagine this scene during the day. Totally different. I love this and wouldn’t change a thing!

    1. Thanks so much, Emilio. So true about the difference – I passed this door a number of times during the day. Perhaps had it been partially lit by the sun when I passed, it may have been an interesting shot, but nothing as dramatic and eye-catching as this one was for me!

  2. Captureing the essence of the door and warehouse.. the door is lit inviting you in to it because of being lit up by the lamp. Being brand new and ware house old someone wants you to step into their world..not just a warehouse.

  3. Outstanding image Stacy 🙂 Terry and I are probably taking a trip to San Francisco next year and Alcatraz will definitely be a stop. I love how the light highlights the deterioration and textures. Wonderful work.

    1. Thanks so much, Joe 🙂 And I’m excited for you and Terry! Make sure you order tickets on-line in advance. They sell out weeks in advance. And you should look into the first ferry of the morning AND/or the evening ferry. Wonderful to be the first and the last on the island. Spending that amount of time there was absolutely the best choice I made!
