“Fallen Fireman”
Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you’ve done your part
You’ve answered your last call
Rest knowing that in god we sought
Oh lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.

Strong image, Joe. Touching poem, as well. It is always amazing when a single photo can tell so much.

Thanks for sharing the backstory, Joe. Beautiful pairing of image and poetry. Just makes my heart ache for this unknown fallen firefighter …

Your work is so beautiful, Joe. Did you happen upon this funeral? (you know I love the back story). There’s always so much symbolism and passion around the firefighting profession

I was walking along Main Street in Bayshore and my original thought was to photograph St. Patricks Church because it really has magnificent architecture but when I got there they were holding this funeral for this firefighter. The white gloves on this chrome valve just caught my attention. I would have taken more images but I felt like I was intruding on their sorrow, so as they say in Italy “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade” (or Limoncello) 🙂

Very emotional image, Joe. Crazy how so often a detail can tell the entire story.

Powerful image and words. I like the contrasts, the simplicity and beauty. The idea with photography and poetry in combination really works!

This is so beautiful Joe, a great post! I love the contrast of cold shiny metal and the soft cotton gloves. The reflections of people are really cool also! 🙂

Thank you very much Elina 🙂 This particular firetruck was a 1936 and is used only for carrying caskets.

This is a gorgeous photo ~ very emotive– although at first I did think you were talking about the movie… which was very good 🙂

OK…now you’ve done it, I have to counter with something, “REDRUM…” Oh wait—wrong movie… I meant to say something more along the lines of, “If it wasn’t for pizza and other fine Italian foods, there would be no happiness….”

That movie always reminds me of the late James Gandolfini 🙂
